MSMEs – True Nation-Builder

Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the lowest layer of the enterprise system in any country. Being at the ‘bottom of the pyramid’, their potential is substantial. The need for tapping this potential, therefore, is not only a business case, but a wider issue in the overall development agenda of countries, including India, and at the subnational level. They are significantly influenced by trends in the global and national economy relating to business performance, and developments in technology and trade.

In India, the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector is a major contributor to the socio-economic development of the country. In India, the sector has gained significant importance due to its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country and its exports. The sector has also contributed immensely to entrepreneurship development, especially in semi-urban and rural areas of India. MSMEs are the catalysts to reviving the Indian economy and the protection of their interests is central to India’s future growth agenda.

The Government has envisioned doubling the Indian economy to US$ 5 trillion by 2025-26. To achieve this goal, career opportunities for the young population have been generated and MSMEs have the potential to serve as a key employment generator. Therefore, the government has taken up the promotion of MSMEs to create new jobs in the sector. Further, the government aims to enhance MSME’s share in exports and its contribution to GDP. Government has allocated the budget of Rs. 15,700 crore (US$ 2.14 billion) for MSMEs in FY22 which is more than two times vis-à-vis Rs. 7,572 crore (US$ 1.03 billion) in FY21.

Gujarat and MSMEs - Strategic Nation Building Alliance

Gujarat is considered the industrial hub of India establishing itself as a manufacturing powerhouse of more than 100 product clusters. The state is well known for its entrepreneurial zeal, industrious workforce, and impeccable business acumen.

The MSMEs here have emerged as one of the vibrant and dynamic sectors playing an essential role in providing opportunities and employment in the areas of Engineering, Textile, Chemicals, Plastic, Food Processing, Ceramics, Pharmaceuticals, APIs & Drugs, Auto and Auto components, and Gems and Jewellery, etc. It contributes more than 17% in total exports of the nation.

India has approximately 6.3 crore MSMEs. The number of registered MSMEs stood at 80.16 lakh units as of March 31, 2022. Gujarat stands third with 6.48 lakh Udyam registered units.

Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bharuch, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, and Valsad are the major Multi-Product MSMEs clusters in the state.

Challenges for MSMEs

Though MSMEs are backbone of the nation, still they are the ones who are not well equipped with proper infrastructure. They face many challenges which can be observed as below :

Lack of Financial Knowledge

Technology Remains a Major Prevention

Absence of Security in Loan

Lack of Access to Financing Solutions

Unavailability of Credit

Lack of Trust

Centre for MSMEs – Enablement, Enhancement, and Enrichment

The Centre has been instituted under Adani University to help the MSMEs of Gujarat to scale up and sustain themselves in the present age of digitalization and competitiveness. The MSMEs are the major contributor to the Indian economy which account for around 30% of GDP providing over 110million employment opportunities. To scale up and sustain the present scenario, the MSMEs should be competitive and adapt to technological tools for growth. Adani University’s Centre for MSMEs has been created to Enable scaling up, Enhance the value output and Enrich the performance of MSMEs in Gujarat and thereby helping them to scale up their business. The Centre for MSMEs would help the MSMEs to find their true potential for their sustainable growth by organizing awareness webinars, round-table interactions, facilitation, handholding, and summits. With its vast pool of academicians and research scholars, the University would help the MSMEs adopt technology at a much lesser cost and give proper guidance for managing their business. Adani University is registered host institute by Ministry of MSMEs, Govt. of India for incubating MSMEs and aid them in growth.

Growth Trajectory for MSMEs

The MSMEs would get the support of academicians from the University who brings with them vast experience in consulting various small and medium industries thereby enabling them to grow multifold. The academicians and research scholars would work closely with the MSMEs and provide solutions for their sustainable growth at a nominal charge. The University would also depute its students for studying the problems and providing solutions as part of the industry-academia interface. The government is facilitating several measures to ensure enough liquidity flows into these enterprises. It is necessary that MSMEs need to eventually aspire to become the large enterprises of tomorrow, and not stay MSMEs forever.
